The architecture Proletariat
Reading in the New York Times (August 19, 2007):
"To limit the financial burden, some architects enlist the help of interns. The summer interns in Mr. Eisenman's office, for example, many of whom are European, work only on competitions, not commissions. They are not paid a salary, but Mr. Eisenman said the experience enhances their graduate school and job prospects." (Source: NYT, August 19,2007)Great - at least Mr. Eisenman dares to say the truth.
...and in the The New York Observer Eisenman says:
"If you were a son of mine, I wouldn’t want you to be an architect," the septuagenarian told this reporter, "because it’s a tough way to be in the world. Look, my son who graduated from law school three years ago makes more money? than I do after 40 years of working." (Source: The New York Observer)Eisenman knows why.
Of course the interns do it voluntary. But apparently they're dazzled by the architect's fame, hoping to grade up their CV's to join one day the rat race for promising commissions. How many of them will fulfil this dreams?
Don't work for free, that also includes unpaid overtime and weekend work. You're harming both you and the economy (unless you're doing non-profit work).
Por lo visto vamos a tener que dejar el negocio para hacernos todos lawers puesto que aquí no hay dinero para todos...
